As with other precision techniques, Varnish requires a relatively smooth and low-porosity surface. On coverings with very deep textures, wide weaves, or rustic fabrics, the Varnish tends to be absorbed by the material or spread through the fibers, causing it to lose its characteristic shine, relief effect, and design definition.
